Panchindiya Sutra

Gurusthapana - a holy book stands in for the Guru, honoured before worship
Gurusthapana - a holy book stands in for the Guru, honoured before worship
In one breath: before I pray, I set my Guru before me - and a true Guru is measured not by title but by 36 real qualities.

The Panchindiya Sutra is recited to establish and honour the Guru (guru-sthapana). It defines a true Guru not by title but by 36 qualities (chhattis gun) - the exact inner standard a spiritual guide is held to.

New here? The Panchindiya Sutra is the Guru-sthapana - the sutra that 'establishes' the Guru at the start of Samayik and Pratikraman. When no living ascetic teacher is present, a holy book (with the Navkar Mantra) is placed on a stand to represent the Guru, and this sutra is recited to honour him. It lists the 36 qualities (chhattis gun) that define a true Guru. The verses are stanzas 91-92 of the Sambodha Prakarana by Acharya Haribhadra Suri.

Going Deeper

The 36 Gunas, named in full

The sutra measures a Guru's worth in 36 concrete qualities - eighteen of restraint, eighteen of practice:

  • 5 - senses mastered (indriya): touch, taste, smell, sight, hearing
  • 9 - safeguards of celibacy (brahmacharya nav-vaad): the nine fences that protect a vow of purity - around company, conversation, seating, glances, memory, food and comfort
  • 4 - freedom from passions (kashaya): anger, ego, deceit, greed
  • 5 - great vows (mahavrata): non-violence, truth, non-stealing, celibacy, non-possession
  • 5 - conducts (achara): in knowledge, faith, conduct, austerity and energy
  • 5 - carefulness (samiti): in walking, speaking, seeking food, handling things, and disposal
  • 3 - restraints (gupti): of mind, speech and body

5 + 9 + 4 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 3 = 36.

Why 18 + 18?

The design is deliberate. The first eighteen are about stopping - what a true Guru has renounced. The second eighteen are about doing - what he actively lives. A guide who has only given things up is not enough; a guide who performs without inner restraint is not enough either. Real authority is both at once.

Deep Dive

The 23 sense-objects a Guru is not ruled by (8+5+2+5+3)

5
Taste

2
Smell

5
Sight

3

The 23 objects of the five senses

A true Guru is not ruled by what the senses chase. The five senses have 23 objects (vishaya):

  • Touch (8) - light, heavy, soft, hard, cold, hot, oily, dry
  • Taste (5) - sweet, sour, alkaline, bitter, acrid
  • Smell (2) - fragrance, foul smell
  • Sight (5) - white, black, red, yellow, green
  • Hearing (3) - sound of living beings (sachitta), of non-living (achitta), and mixed (misra)
The 9 safeguards of celibacy (nava-vidha brahmacharya)

Brahmacharya here means giving up sensual indulgence through three yoga (mind, speech, body) and three karana. Nine protective rules:

  1. Not to stay in a place with women, animals or eunuchs
  2. Not to talk about women in a passionate way
  3. A man should not use a seat a woman just left for 2 ghadi (48 min); a woman waits 3 prahara after a man
  4. Not to gaze at the body or limbs of women
  5. Not to stay where a couple is on the other side of a wall
  6. Not to recall past sexual pleasures
  7. Not to over-eat (limit: 32 morsels for a man, 28 for a woman)
  8. Not to take intoxicating food or drink
  9. Not to adorn or decorate the body
The 4 passions (kashaya) he is free of

Kashaya pollutes the soul's pure nature and lengthens the cycle of births:

  1. Krodha (anger) - rage, malice, enmity, unforgivingness
  2. Mana (pride) - vanity, egotism, arrogance
  3. Maya (deceit) - fraud, cheating, crookedness
  4. Lobha (greed) - craving, covetousness, discontent

5 senses + 9 celibacy + 4 passions = 18 qualities of RESTRAINT (given up).

The 5 great vows (mahavrata)

Each vow is kept through three yoga and three karana (not doing, not causing, not approving):

  1. Ahimsa - giving up all violence
  2. Satya - giving up untruth
  3. Achaurya - taking nothing that is not given
  4. Brahmacharya - giving up all sexual activity
  5. Aparigraha - giving up possessiveness
The 5-fold conduct (panchachara)
  1. Jnanachara - conduct that grows right knowledge, studied properly
  2. Darshanachara - conduct that grows and steadies right faith
  3. Charitrachara - conduct that grows and steadies right conduct
  4. Tapachara - conduct that grows external and internal austerity (tapa)
  5. Viryachara - putting full energy (virya) into self-discipline, without laziness
The 5 samitis & 3 guptis

Samiti = acting rightly with full awareness (jayana). Gupti = withdrawing from harmful activity.

5 Samitis (careful action):

  1. Irya - walking carefully, watching the path
  2. Bhasha - speaking only blameless words
  3. Eshana - accepting faultless alms
  4. Adana-nikshepana - picking up / putting down things after inspecting (pratilekhana)
  5. Paristhapanika - disposing of waste carefully

3 Guptis (restraint):

  1. Mana gupti - guarding the mind from evil thoughts
  2. Vachana gupti - guarding speech
  3. Kaya gupti - guarding bodily action

5 vows + 5 conduct + 5 samiti + 3 gupti = 18 qualities of PRACTICE.

Inner Meaning & Psychology

This sutra is really a checklist for trust. Before you accept anyone as a guide, it asks: are the five senses mastered, is celibacy guarded ninefold, are the four passions gone? In Jainism, authority is earned by conduct, not claimed by position.

The 36 qualities split evenly: eighteen of restraint (what a Guru has given up) and eighteen of practice (what he lives every day) - a balance of stopping the wrong and doing the right.

Recited before worship, it quietly trains your own aspiration: these are not only a Guru's marks, they are the direction a serious seeker walks in.

Read it the other way round and it becomes a mirror for you, not only a test for a Guru. The same 36 are the growth-map of any serious seeker: master one sense here, drop one passion there, keep one carefulness today.

Notice the design - 18 things given up and 18 things taken up. All real change has these two halves: stop the harmful, start the helpful. The sutra quietly teaches that a guide (and a self) is built by subtraction and addition together.

And why 'install' a Guru even when none is physically present, placing a holy book on a stand? Because we behave differently before a witness. The sthapana sets up an inner witness - a felt sense of being seen by something higher - which steadies the mind before worship.

Psychologically, naming a high standard before you act is a proven self-control move. The 36 qualities become a pre-commitment - you have told your own mind what 'good' looks like, so you are far more likely to live up to it. And setting a worthy witness before worship (the sthapana) calms the body too: a settled, reverent posture lowers arousal and sharpens attention - exactly the state in which the mind learns and changes best.

How It Cleanses the Soul

You recite Panchindiya to establish the Guru before worship - but read closely, it also installs a mirror. Each of the 36 is a question turned back on you: are my senses in my control, or am I in theirs? Do I stop at anger, or ride it?

That is how it cleanses - not by washing sin off from outside, but by raising the standard inside. The soul is dimmed by kashaya and carelessness; the 36 gunas are precisely their opposites. Hold the ideal before the mind often enough and the mind begins to lean toward it - reverence for a quality is the first step to owning it.

What to carry away: after this sutra, pick one guna for the day - one sense to guard, one carefulness to keep. A sutra recited and forgotten purifies little; a single line lived changes the one who recites it.

Honouring a standard is the first step to living it. By naming 36 real virtues out loud before worship, you plant the bar high in your own mind - and the mind drifts toward whatever it keeps in view.

It also cleanses the ego at the doorway. Before you do anything spiritual, you place something worthier than yourself at the centre. That one act of lowering the self is what makes the worship that follows sincere rather than mechanical.

In karma terms, each item on this list marks a spot where reaction usually binds karma - a sense indulged, a passion flared, a carelessness. So the 36 are really 36 places to stop forming new karma (samvar). Live even one of them a little better today and an old habit-groove is fed a little less, and begins to fade (nirjara).

That is also where the positiveness comes from: you are not scolding yourself, you are aiming. A mind fixed on 36 virtues to grow toward is hopeful and forward-moving rather than guilty - and in both psychology and practice, hope is what actually changes behaviour.

In Today's Language (Gen-Z)

Basically a background-check before you hit follow. Real guru status is not the robe or the crowd - it is 36 boxes ticked: senses controlled, no lust, no anger/ego/greed, vows kept, disciplined at every step. In an age of self-proclaimed gurus, this sutra is Jainism's verified badge - character over clout.

It is basically a 36-point green-flag checklist for a real mentor - worth running before you let anyone influence your life, not just a monk.

Clout is not credibility. The robe, the following, the stage - none of it counts here; only the 36 boxes do. A quiet person who ticks them beats a famous one who does not.

Run the same checklist on yourself now and then. The point is not to judge others - it is to spot which box you could tick next.

Science-wise, we literally become like whoever we admire and repeat - mirror neurons and identity both pull us toward our models. So running a 36-point virtue checklist before worship is you programming your own 'become-this' target.

And each guna you actually practise weakens an old auto-reaction (a bad-karma habit loop) and lays down a better one. Reverence first, behaviour follows - that is the quiet mechanism, and the calmer, cleaner mind is the reward.

Why We Recite It

We recite it to install the Guru before worship - and quietly to remind ourselves of the bar. You are not just checking someone else; you are memorising the 36 targets you are aiming at too.
