Pravachan on SAMVAR Bhavna

LOKA BHAVANA

LOKA BHAVANA  – Transitory of universe

Universe is situated from eternal,
Which is divided in three Lokas.
We are wandering without knowledge....
I'm praying to you...10

Jainism has known for hundreds of centuries what modern science has now told us – that the universe is infinite, that there are galaxies we are yet to discover.

Science has extrapolated on the basis of information received from the Hubble and Kepler telescopes that there are a hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe. One such galaxy is the Milky Way. The Milky Way has at least 100 billion planets of varying sizes.
Our planet, Earth, with a 29 per cent land surface of 14,90,00,000 square km, is one among these planets, a dot in the vast span of the Milky Way.
And, each one of us is just one of the estimated seven billion human people living on Earth.

Referencing ourselves in the context of such a gigantic space can boggle the mind. So, let’s try this experiment: gaze at the sky. That dot where you look at the sky is infinite. Now imagine your place in the universe.

Contemplation of the grand universal expanse makes us realise how infinitesimalwe are in the larger scheme of things and how much smaller our sorrows and worries are in perspective.

Our self-created cocoon of desires and emotions, successes and failures, angsts and agonies which seem so real to us melt into nothingness when we place them in the intimidating largeness of the universe.

Such contemplation helps us grow out of our obsessive absorption with ourselves and also connect with what is truly real.
Like the fathomless universe, there is something even more incredible within us, something that is subtle and supremely powerful. Through the manifestation of this indomitable force called the soul, our Jain seers and Tirthankars saw and expounded the nature of the universe just as we know it today. Our soul too has latent divinity that can be unraveled by our sadhana – meditation, contemplation and conduct.

Jain scriptures narrate the nature of the universe in great detail. The universe is divided into Lok Akaash and Alok Akaash. Lok is the part of the gigantic universe that has life. It is spread in the shape of a man standing with both hands on his waist and legs stretched wide whereas Alok is the infinite space beyond Lok.

Lok, described as 14 Rajlok, comprises six elements (dravya): soul, matter, dharma (that facilitates mobility), adharma (that facilitates inertia), time and space. Lok is divided into Urdhvaloka - the heavenly areas, Madhyaloka where we live, and Adholoka or hell. At the apex is Siddha Sheela, the abode of liberated souls. That is the aspirational destination for all living beings, far away from the world of perpetual flux that we inhabit.

In Lok Akaash, living beings wander from one life to another without ever finding lasting peace and happiness. All living beings in Lok experience pain. Those living beings with five sensory organs (panchendriya) with or without a mind (sangni-asangni) crave to be free of pain. Unfortunately, real happiness eludes us because of ignorance and attachment that create bondage and tie us down to the vicious cycle of births and deaths in the universe. Only Siddha Sheela offers eternal bliss. Reaching there is possible through a series of steps, the most important one being self-realisation.

Just as fire burns impurities off gold, spiritual activities like meditation and penance shred the karmic load off our soul.

Reducing our lust for a material life, controlling our mind and being mindful of our goal at all times go a long way in speeding up this spiritual journey.

The path is long and tough for a person without discipline and determination. Even if a fan stops whirring in summer, we get restless. That’s why it’s all-important to watch our mind at all times. Param Pujya Bhaishree, who epitomizes total lack of desire, tells us to be calm observers of our desires and emotions in order to be able to overcome them.

Our meditation requires stillness of all the three guptis- body, speech and mind. Once we acquire such stillness, self-realisation is at hand. In his masterful composition, ‘Apoorva avsar,’ Param Krupaludev Shrimadji says material objects, place, time and emotions (dravya, kshetra, kaal and bhaav) cause impediments (pratibandh) in an unenlightened soul’s journey.  A renounced soul, however, has none.

Our birth is an incalculably miniscule component of our existence over countless millennia. We do not remember it but we have made appearances in various parts of the universe including heaven and hell from the beginning of time. While our names and forms have changed with each birth, what has stayed constant through all births is our soul.

So, why not focus on the eternal and drop the ephemeral? Let’s drop the corporal shell from our minds and attach to the substratum of our being. Let’s be free of worries, fears and sorrows and endeavour to join the sublime consciousness of our Tirthankars at Siddha Sheela. What we know, let’s dwell upon. What we dwell upon, let’s experience. What we experience, let’s ensure it endures. Once on this trajectory, the Siddha Sheela is the limit for us.

Explanation of ANYATVA BHAVANA in English and Hindi

ANYATVA BHAVNA

Soul is separate from my body,
All relatives are different from me,
I think, my soul is as God.....
I'm praying to you....5

Under this reflection, one thinks that one's own soul is separate from any other objects or living beings of the world. Even his physical body is also not his. At the time of death, soul leaves the body behind. The body is matter, while the soul is all consciousness.

The soul therefore should not develop attachment for worldly objects, other living beings, or to his physical body. He should not allow himself to be controlled by desires, greed, and urges of his own physical body.

Aa sansaarma koi koinu nathi em chintavvu te paanchmi anyatvabhavana.
Translation : To contemplate that nobody truly belongs to another person is Anyatvabhavana.— Shrimad Rajchandra

Anyatva Bhavna – Separateness
Anyatva Bhavana – Thinking of the soul as separate from the body.

Under this reflection, one thinks that one’s own soul is separate from any other objects or living beings of the world. Even his physical body is also not his. At the time of death, soul leaves the body behind. The body is matter, while the soul is all consciousness.
The Jain concept of Anyatva refers to the thinking that we have a sense of identity which may be associated to us belonging to a community, a family, a workplace or any other group, for example.

Anyatva means that we should not identify ourselves with these things. They are temporary and part of sansaar. The truth is that nothing is mine. We are the soul and only the soul.

The body and the soul are different and separate from each other. The body is inert, but my soul is the very embodiment of consciousness. The soul is imperishable. It will not die. The body; of course, burns and becomes ashes. Agonies afflict only the body and not to the soul. I am not the body. The body is not mine.
The soul therefore should not develop attachment for worldly objects, other living beings, or to his physical body. He should not allow himself to be controlled by desires, greed, and urges of his own physical body.
This Bhavana reflects the fact that the body is separate to the soul. Here are some examples to illustrate this Bhavana.

As time passes, the body will age and decay. Eventually, it will perish. However, the only thing which is imperishable is the soul.

The soul is the embodiment of consciousness. For this reason we shouldn’t get attached to the body that we are born into as it will not come with us in our next birth.

This applies to the relationships that the body identifies with. They are separate to the soul. They are not everlasting! In one lifetime we may be the parent of a being. However, in another lifetime we could be a sibling to the same being. Therefore we should not be attached to the body or the relationships that the body can identify with. We also need to refrain from indulging in the passions of the physical body, through emotions, such as, greed, anger, ego or lust.

Mahavir Bhagwan experienced 27 significant births prior to liberating his soul. His soul was born into different gatis. Every time his life ended, the body perished and the soul was born into a new form with a different body. For this reason, we should not be attached to the body as it is not ours. As our soul moves from one life form to another our body will not.

Now the bliss in this understanding is all to do with the human birth. Through the human birth one can attain Moksha. This gives us freedom from pain, suffering, greed, lust, ego, loss and much more. So let’s focus on the soul, rather than, the body and let’s empower the soul  so that we can be rid of birth, death and rebirth.

Solitude of the soul
Explanation of EKATVA BHAVANA in English and Hindi

EKATVA BHAVNA

बहिरात्मा अज्ञानीजीव उक्त तथ्य से अपरिचित ही रहते हैं। जो आत्मा उक्त सत्य या निजात्मतत्त्व को पहिचानते हैं, वे ही विवेकी ज्ञानी हैं। जो जीव निजात्मतत्त्व को पहिचानकर, जानकर निज में ही जम जाते हैं, रम जाते हैं;

This soul of mine is alone, it has come alone, will go alone, will bear the fruits of his deeds alone; to contemplate thus from the deep realms of consciousness is the fourth Ekatva bhavana.

Aa maaro aatma eklo chhe, te eklo aavyo chhe, eklo jashe, potaanaa karelaa karma eklo bhogavshe, antahkarana thi em chintavvu te chothi ekatva bhavana.
— Shrimad Rajchandra

Under this reflection, one thinks that the soul is solitaire, and lonely in existence. The soul assumes birth alone, and departs alone from this world. The soul is responsible for its own actions and karmas. The soul will enjoy the fruits, and suffer the bad consequences of its own action alone. Such thoughts will stimulate his efforts to get rid of karmas by his own initiative and will lead religious life.

“The soul is solitaire, and lonely in existence. The Soul assumes birth alone, and departs alone from the life form. The Soul will be responsible for its own actions, and karmas. The Soul will enjoy the fruit, and suffer bad consequences of its own action alone."

I came alone and will go alone too,
There is neither any friend nor enemy.
None takes my manifold sufferings......
I'm praying to you.....

This Bhavana reflects the fact that ultimately we are alone. Here are some examples to illustrate this Bhavana. Regardless of which life form the soul is born into, there is only one soul in each being. Therefore we are born alone and we die alone. Do you have any possessions? No matter how much wealth you have, I’m sure you will all answer yes. For example, you may have a car, a home, clothes, jewellery, ipod, stationary….something! If something happened to you tomorrow, what do you really have? Are you going to be able to take any of these things with you? The answer is no. The only thing that is permanent and everlasting is the soul.

The BLISS that you can feel whilst contemplating, accepting and cultivating this Bhavana is in knowing your soul, immersing yourself in it and being set free by detaching from all materials in the world. By knowing that we are experiencing the ‘now’ because of our past actions, we can relish in the possibility of controlling our thoughts, speech and actions which will determine the karma we bind from here on.
How Ekatva Bhavana makes us aware that we, as a soul, are alone in this world. We arrive in this world all alone and we depart from it all alone. And among all our friends and relatives, we live alone! Even when we are with our loved ones, we alone have to suffer the consequences of our karma. When our body is in pain, no one can experience and share in our pain no matter how compassionate they are. But thinking about this will only result in loneliness, depression; isn’t it? But that is a one perspective of what Ekatva is. When describing Ekatva Bhavana in the granth “Shant Sudharas”, Upadhyay Shri Vinayvijayji Maharaj Saheb, starts with a verse that tells us what we really are:
“The soul is lonely in existence. It is Bhagwan. It is totally submerged in  knowledge and perception. Everything else is just your attachment, imagination. This attachment is the root cause of all your unhappiness.” Each and every soul has the same characteristics – knowledge, purity, perception, blissful, eternal, etc. That is our true nature. The real happiness, bliss is within us. But due to ignorance, we depend on external factors such as people, material objects, money and power, for our happiness. Our expectations that these things will make me happy, causes us pain. When we fall sick and no one can either take away or be our partner is this pain, we feel lonely, depressed. But at such times we have to understand that this is reality.
Ekatva Bhavana is contemplation of this fact. It also says that at times like this, look within and turn this loneliness into solitude. Ekatva Bhavana teaches us that real peace, bliss, is when you are alone. Being with more people, more materialistic things makes your life complicated and prone to unwanted problems, and many struggles. This fact is illustrated in Uttaradhyayan Sutra in a story about Nami Rajarshi, the king of Mithila.  King Nami was very wealthy and was enjoying all the material comforts. He had many young wives and was living a happy life. Once, the king developed burning sensation all over the body. The sensation steadily grew and became so intense that the king could no longer bear it. All the queens were worried. Many skillful physicians attempted to cure him with various medicines, but nothing helped. The king was tired and frustrated with this illness. After a lot of search, they found one expert physician who recommended application of Malaygiri sandalwood paste over all his body. The queens themselves started making paste by grinding sandalwood on hard stone. Since they all were wearing bangles, it created loud jingling sound. The king, already in a lot of pain, could not bear the loud noise created by the bangles He therefore asked them to either stop grinding the sandalwood or do it quietly. Thereupon the queens kept only one bangle on each hand and removed the rest. That stopped the sound altogether. The king liked that the noise was gone, but wondered whether the queens had discontinued preparing the paste. Feeling impatient, he asked the queens whether they had stopped making the paste. The queens replied that they were still doing the grinding. The noise had stopped because they had retained only one bangle on each hand and removed the rest. There was no banging of bangles on each other and hence no sound. This made an unexpected impact on the mind of Nami Rajarshi. He realized the importance of solitude, the significance of Ekatva. Having more things to deal with causes more problems. It creates unnecessary hustle and bustle, while peace lays in solitariness. He thought, “That one bangle, how nicely it is in peace! When there were more bangles, it created such a nuisance. I am like that bangle. Just like that bangle, as long as I live with other people, I will not be able find peace and bliss. Instead if I focus on my eternal, blissful soul, I will be able to achieve peace and liberation. While in this contemplation, he recollected his previous lives. He decided that when he recovers from the pain, he will renounce the worldly life and become a sadhu. After making such resolve, he went to bed. When he woke up in the morning to the melodious sound of musical instruments, he found himself completely recovered from his illness.
He kept his resolution and took diksha. He was completely detached from the worldly objects and steadfast in his determination to seek liberation. Lord Indra took a disguise and tried to persuade him as a test of his determination. Nami Rajarshi passed the test. He told Indra “Each and every object that you are telling me as mine, does not really belong to me. I am on my own. I am a lone traveler and desire to be within myself.”
There is lot we can learn from this story. Nami Rajarshi did not take diksha out of depression. He was able to perceive the beauty of being ‘alone’, immersed in the soul. There was an ecstasy in his following the solitary path. By focusing within, by taking solace in the contemplation of Ekatva Bhavana, we can achieve peace, knowledge of the self, detachment, dissolution of passions. We can get rid of bad karma and progress on the spiritual path to liberation. Instead of focusing on our eternal being, if we focus on what we have been associated with due to circumstances, we are bound to bring unhappiness in our lives. Just like we board a train and meet new people there, make new relations with the other passengers inside and say goodbye as soon as we reach our destination, our soul enters our body and forms many relations – son, daughter, sister, brother, etc. But these relations last only till this body lasts.
At the time of death the soul has to leave this body and go all alone leaving behind all these relations; possibly never to meet them again. Our association, love and affection for others should not result into attachment because it cannot save us from pangs of life. Our attachment stops us from realizing who we are. We need to contemplate on the true nature of things. The soul is eternal and everything else in temporary. We need to increase our awareness. The more we become aware of the soul, we realize that all livings beings are same as us – a pure, eternal, blissful soul. We then connect with others and with nature at a different level and actually realize that we are not alone after all!
But to get there, first we need to be in solitude and get it touch with our own self. That is Ekatva Bhavana.

What I can call mine in the correct sense of the term is only the soul – it has come alone and it will alone leave the body at death; it will be alone to enjoy or suffer from the fruits of hid good or bad actions. Contemplating on such true nature of the world is called Ekatva Bhavana
